A key that unlocks all facilities designed for people with reduced mobility. This idea became a reality as early as 1986, and since then it has been possible to unlock thousands of such doors and facilities across Europe.
Being exceptional does not mean being the loudest. It means having a vision that you do not alter to suit the political climate. It means standing by people even when others look the other way. It means constantly asking the question: what else can we do? The organisation Bez bariéry – National Platform Against Barriers was founded in 2016 in response to the silent but everyday discrimination faced by people with disabilities, older people, parents with young children and people in crisis situations. We are not merely critics. We are the ones who provide solutions – concrete, measurable and sustainable. What sets us apart is that we bridge three worlds: the professional, the civic and the public. Our proposals are not merely emotional appeals – they are underpinned by data, international standards and a thorough understanding of the Slovak context. Thanks to this, we are able to engage with architects and politicians alike, as well as with civil servants and older people who struggle to get around the city. Another reason why people value us is our people-centred approach. We don’t write from our offices, but from the field. We’re in schools, hospitals, stations and community centres. We know the personal stories of people whom barriers have pushed to the margins. And we know how to bring them back into the heart of the action.
We don’t just focus on physical barriers – stairs, kerbs, doors. We also see the invisible barriers: bureaucracy, a lack of information, prejudice. That is why we also create campaigns, petitions, studies and strategies that change the system. Our flagship initiative is the Expert Strategy for Removing Barriers by 2030 – a document that has a real impact on public policy. We also see our uniqueness in the way we engage people. We view our supporters as co-creators – which is why we organise meetings and workshops, share our know-how and create a platform that has both ears and a voice. Ears to listen to needs on the ground, and a voice to drive change. Finally, what makes us exceptional is that we do not work ‘for’ people with disabilities – but alongside them. Every step, every project, every change stems from their experiences, ideas and needs. Without them, it wouldn’t be real. We are not just an organisation. We are a movement. A movement for a space where there will be no need to talk about exceptionality – because equality, accessibility and respect will be the norm. And that is the vision that makes us exceptional today.
